Teaching Philosophy |
Strategy |
Real learning takes place when students are involved in ongoing processes of exploration and discovery. My hope is always to create an environment and supporting lessons that require investigation, exploration and analysis that will lead to discovery and resolution. I hope that through this approach students find enjoyment in both the process and the subject matter.
In studying science understanding nomenclature as well as proper techniques, processes and technology are necessary and important, however proper use of all of these is a means to an end rather than the ultimate goal. Students really should learn to think, question and analyze in creative and personal ways using the tools of science.
As a teacher it is my responsibility to adapt this general approach to different instructional settings including large lecture classes and small lab groups, field study and online instruction. I am comfortable in all these settings as well as working with the diverse student populations that are present. In all these settings I try to utilize the principles described above to create an environment of learning.
